Video: an introduction to TUNES pilot
Are Dutch folk songs related to Irish folk songs? Melodies of European musical traditions are compared in Polifonia’s TUNES pilot with use of the latest technologies. Pilot leader Peter van Kranenburg explains this approach in our new video.
On Polifonia’s YouTube channel, we publish a series of videos about the pilots and work packages. This week’s upload: TUNES
In addition to the ORGANS pilot, Peter van Kranenburg (Meertens Institute, KNAW) is also leading TUNES. In the latest video on the Polifonia YouTube channel, van Kranenburg explains the value of the TUNES pilot. In this pilot researchers will dive into the digital music collection of the Meertens Institute which includes thousands of melodies from Dutch popular culture spanning five centuries. To trace the possible international origins of Dutch early popular music culture, TUNES will link the Meertens Institute’s melody collection to a large number of other European collections (e.g. the Irish folk song collection) in order to find information on the cultural evolution of musical style, oral transmission and variation.
