Last year, the Polifonia project and new ways of engaging with our musical past were introduced to audiences of all ages during the European Night of the Researcher. This year, the Polifonia team looks forward to returning to this colorful event!
La Notte Europea dei Ricercatori takes place in the Italian Region Emilia-Romagna on Sept. 29 and is designed to engage the public in the work of scientists. The main activities, animated by researchers working in a wide range of disciplines from science, technology and humanities, include: tours, games, science cafes, public philosophical talks, lectures and demonstrations. At the Bologna location of this festival (Piazza Lucio Dalla), the Polifonia project aims to familiarize the audience with how AI methods help integrate knowledge about Europe’s musical heritage and make it accessible to a wide audience. The Polifonia team will pay special attention to Bologna’s rich musical past from the 15th to the 19th century and will be ready to receive the audience from 6 p.m. to midnight. TONALITIES, IReMus’ pilot for musical heritage data project Polifonia, develops tools for the modal-tonal identification, exploration and classification of monophonic and polyphonic notated music from the Renaissance to the twentieth century. Now, the tools are available for use within the TONALITIES Interface for music analysis. Additionally, a patent was recently acquired for this collaborative interface by the IReMus lab.

After four years of development work, the Polifonia project team is excited to present the results. The consortium, consisting of 10 partners from Italy, the Netherlands, France, England and Ireland launches the music discoverability platform ‘Polifonia Web Portal’. In addition, the researchers and developers have also unlocked and linked other music data, developed tools and software that will help musicologists take steps forward in their research on European musical heritage.
