Polifonia's ‘Harmonic Memory’ introduced at Web Conference 2023 (Austin, USA)

Andrea Poltronieri (UNIBO) is to present the paper The Harmonic Memory: a Knowledge Graph of harmonic patterns as a trustworthy framework for computational creativity at the Web Conference 2023, a yearly international conference on the topic of the future directions of the World Wide Web.

The Conference aims to provide the world with a premier forum for discussion and debate about the evolution of the Web, the standardization of its associated technologies, and the impact of those technologies on society and culture. During the track “Creative Web – Session 2: Text, images & music” on May 3rd, Polifonia will introduce the Harmonic Memory. 

Harmonic Memory is a Knowledge Graph of harmonic patterns extracted from a large and heterogeneous musical corpus and has a goal to enable trustworthy machine creativity. Andrea will provide examples of how this design enables novel pathways for combinational creativity.

In 2024, Paul Mulholland, Naomi Barker and Paul Warren (The Open University, U.K) are continuing their experiment investigating how different kinds of music influence the appreciation of an artwork; and to what extent the same kind of sense-making processes are used when viewing artwork and when listening to music. To do this, the researchers are looking for more participants. They have now automated the process so that participants can complete the experiment online without the involvement of an experimenter.

During the last project meeting, the Polifonia consortium extensively discussed how to foster the impact of the project in academia and beyond. How to make the output of Polifonia sustainable after the lifetime of the project is one important aspect.
