Recap: ACCESS’s inclusive haptics drumming workshop at Milton Keynes International Festival
How do you ensure that everyone can participate in musical activities? That’s the question the ACCESS is trying to answer and this Polifonia pilot is doing so by developing haptic devices in relation to music making. And by actively engaging users during workshops, as was the case at Milton Keynes International Festival 2023 (UK) last Sunday.
An enthusiastic and curious all-age crowd gathered to participate in a special Drumming Workshop during this 10-day long festival that takes place every two years in Milton Keynes. The workshop was organized by ACCESS pilot leader Simon Holland and lead by the great Ravin ‘RAZ’ Jayasuriya.
The type of Haptics being developed within ACCESS allows a user to interact with instruments by receiving tactile and force feedback. In this way, people who are hearing impaired, for example, can also experience and create music. Participants of the workshop not only get acquainted with haptics, but the feedback on the workshop also helps Polifonia the research to new ways of making music.
