Partner introduction: Italian Ministry of Culture (MiC) - ICCD & ICBSA
Preserving the Italian cultural and musical heritage, ICCD and ICBSA together help to discover and promote the heritage of historical bells
- What is the relation between your organisation/institution and music?
The Italian Ministry of Culture has the role of preserving the Italian cultural heritage through the action of its various institutes. In Polifonia, the two institutes ICCD (Central Institute for Catalogues and Documentation) and ICBSA (Central Institute for Sound and Audiovisual Heritage) are involved. ICCD manages the General Catalogue of Cultural Heritage, within which a section is dedicated to Demo-ethno-anthropological Heritage and Intangible Heritage. In this context, music heritage is relevant as a culturally connotated and contextualized expression of a collective cultural identity. In addition, ICCD has in the database many records relating to musical instruments and other types of assets related to the musicological field. ICBSA is the Ministry’s Institute which has the task of holding all musical materials published in Italy with legal deposit. It also manages various sound collections of unpublished materials.
- What do you bring to the Polifonia project?
We will contribute with the General Catalogue of Cultural Heritage database and the ICBSA databases. In addition, research will be carried out on historical bells and new sound materials will be imported reflecting their tangible and intangible aspects. These materials, belonging to local history associations and archives, are not yet digitised. In fact, these are produced and stored in local organisations where various “communities of practitioners” meet, in this case bell-ringers.
- What do you hope to get out of the Polifonia project?
A system for the representation and restitution of a specific heritage (i.e., historic bell-ring). This system will facilitate the interconnection between different sources and the recovery of information through which it is possible to refine research and cataloging activities, especially for preserving heritage.
